THE MYSTERY OF THE GOSPEL (1)
Main Text: “And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel.” – Ephesians 6:19
Beloveds, welcome to a new series of Kingdom Matters Devotional titled “The Mystery of the Gospel.” I pray that, through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, this series will deepen your understanding of the Gospel, strengthen your faith, and establish you firmly in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Before exploring this subject, you must understand two foundational truths, the Gospel and the Mystery. First, the Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ, His death for our sins, His burial, and His resurrection for our justification (1 Corinthians 15:1–4). It is God’s perfect provision for man’s redemption and the only way by which sinners are reconciled to Him. On the other hand, a mystery based on biblical context, is not something mysterious because it is unknowable. Rather, it is a divine truth that was once hidden in God but is revealed by the Holy Spirit to those whose hearts are open to Him. Specifically, it cannot be discovered by human intellect alone; it must be unveiled by divine revelation.
Now, one of the greatest mistakes people make is assuming that the Gospel can be understood through education, philosophy, or human reasoning alone. It cannot. Throughout history, brilliant scholars, philosophers, and intellectuals have wrestled with the message of the cross. Many admired its moral teachings but stumbled over its central truth, that God would save the world through the crucifixion and resurrection of His Son. To the natural mind, this appears unreasonable. How can life come through death? How can victory emerge from a cross? How can a crucified Saviour become the hope of humanity? Yet what the world considers foolishness is, in fact, the wisdom and power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18–25).
Friends, you must understand that the Gospel belongs to a realm that human wisdom cannot enter unless the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of understanding. Interestingly, the greatest barrier to the Gospel is not ignorance but dependence on natural understanding. Many attempt to explain God’s eternal plan using human logic alone. As a result, they appreciate Christianity as a religion but fail to experience Christ as their Saviour. In fact, the Gospel is more than information to be studied. It is revelation to be received. Until the Holy Spirit illuminates the heart, the cross remains merely a historical event instead of the power of God unto salvation. This is why two people may hear the same sermon, one remains unmoved, while the other is transformed forever. The difference is revelation.
Child of God, Paul, one of the greatest theologians of the New Testament, did not ask the Church merely to acquire more knowledge. He prayed that “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened” (Ephesians 1:18). He understood that spiritual truth is not merely learned, it is revealed. Our greatest need, therefore, is not simply to read the Scriptures but to have the Holy Spirit unveil Christ through them because when revelation comes, faith is born. When faith is born, lives are transformed. Put differently, the Gospel is the greatest message ever entrusted to humanity, yet its riches cannot be grasped by natural wisdom alone. It is a divine mystery revealed by the Holy Spirit. As we journey through this series, we shall uncover the hidden treasures of the Gospel, understand why it is called a mystery, and discover how its truths transform every believer who receives them by faith.
