Topic: The Spirit of Hearsay (5)

Main Text: Matthew 12:36 – “Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words will come back to haunt you. There will be a time of reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously.”

Beloveds, welcome to the fifth edition of our thought-provoking series on “The Spirit of Hearsay”. I pray that the divine purpose for which this message has reached you will be fully accomplished, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

In our last edition, we learned that Jesus does not judge by what He sees or hears but by the fear of the Lord. In this edition, we will examine one of the most important reasons why we must be careful with the words we speak. For instance, a critical study of our main text will show that careless words, especially false ones, can destroy destinies, corrupt relationships, and distort God’s plans for individuals, communities, and even nations. But beyond earthly damage, the greatest consequence is that you will give an account before God for every word you speak.

Friends, the fact that you will give an account of your words should compel you to guard your speech. It is not just about avoiding lies, you must also resist slander, gossip, exaggeration, crude jokes, and the casual spreading of unverified information. As a matter of fact, many people may appear morally upright, yet their downfall may come from the sins of the tongue. In fact, the Book of Ecclesiastes warns specifically that you should not let your mouth lead you into sin. In fact, you must understand that the freedom to speak comes with the responsibility of accountability. Therefore, you must avoid risking your destiny over careless chatter; do everything possible to avoid divine judgment for a moment of gossip or hearsay; and determine not to lose eternal rest over words that should have never been spoken.

Saint of God, I urge you to be led by the Holy Spirit to help you bridle your tongue. Choose words that edify, not destroy. Speak truth, not speculation, and endeavor to guard your lips as one who will stand before God.

May the Spirit of the Lord empower you to conquer the spirit of hearsay. May every influence that drives you toward falsehood and destructive speech be broken. May your tongue be sanctified and used only for truth, love, and purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
